Designing Matchwood's Tile Language
How we approached the visual grammar of Matchwood's evolving mechanics — from base tiles to boosters.
Match-three games ask players to read a board in an instant. That makes every tile part of a visual language: color, silhouette, motion, and effects all need to communicate function without turning the board into noise.
For Matchwood, base tiles establish the vocabulary and special tiles extend it. Boosters and obstacles need to feel exciting while remaining visually distinct from ordinary matches, especially as later worlds introduce more mechanics.
The goal is a board that becomes richer without becoming harder to parse. That balance between spectacle and clarity is one of the central design challenges we continue to refine.
